A ROCKING HORSE CHRISTMAS

A faith-based synopsis by David Baughn and Jim Prince – Property of Cyclone Entertainment, LLC

May 3rd, 2016, a baby boy named Joey Collins was born at Providence Hospital in Burbank, California. It is Sam and Edie Collins's first child and they’re overjoyed. They are a modest income family that lives in a 2 bedroom apartment in a 30 unit high rise complex in a poorer section of Burbank. Sam is a factory worker and Edie took a six-month sabbatical from her work as a data processor to take care of her baby boy.

From the onslaught of his birth, Joey and Sam have bonded with their love of horses. Sam would read countless bedtime stories about ponies and horses. Joey gets small gifts on birthdays and Christmas of stuffed toys, framed pictures, and various books of ponies and horses. Edie supports Sam’s dream of one day becoming a horse breeder with their own ranch.

It’s December 2021, and just a week before Christmas. Joey is six years old. He’s been begging and praying for a pony of his own. Unfortunately, Sam’s income doesn’t support that wish, still has his factory job, and Edie lost her job during Covid-19. She is trying to find a job to help their living condition.

Sam and Edie have saved up for the next best Christmas present for Joey, under the circumstances…A Rocking Horse. It’s Christmas Eve and the present is wrapped but obvious next to the Christmas tree. They let Joey unravel it. He jumps for Joey and hugs his present, and his parents. Secretly, his heart wants a real pony.

Sam and Edie kiss Joey goodnight. They leave the room. In the dark, Joey gets down from his bed to kneel and pray to God. Please make my Rocking Horse a real pony.

Joey is fast asleep. Suddenly…a focused shaft of light shines on the Rocking Horse.

Christmas morning, Joey wakes up to see a Palomino-colored pony, staring Joey right in the face. It neighs his excitement as Joey screams with Joy. Sam and Edie rush into the room, dumbfounded.

What follows is very problematic. How do you raise a pony in a two-bedroom apartment? Impossible. Sam and Edie know it will break Joey’s heart have to give up the pony. They try for a little while to keep it a secret by taking the pony out for late-night bathroom walks and feeding the pony by letting him graze the taller grass in a park nearby.

Some apartment neighbors are tolerant, others complain to the manager. The manager gives notice that they either get rid of the pony or vacate the apartment. A young pro bono female attorney comes to the family’s assistance to help delay their conviction.

The news of this phenomenon spreads viral, with pro and con people arguing for and against Joey keeping the pony. The Collins family’s life has been invaded of any privacy, yet they stubbornly fight for Joey’s right to keep the pony.

Eviction day has come. A factory worker lets the Collins family stay in his home, with the Pony in the back yard, so they’re not homeless.

A famous talk show host picks up on the family dilemma and hosts a national telethon event. It raises millions of dollars. So much so that Sam is able to leave his factory job to purchase a horse-breeding ranch in Hidden Hills, California.

It is night. The Collins family watches as Joey brushes his Pony in the stable. Sam, Edie, and Joey look to the sky and they all say “Thank you, God”. A shaft of the line appears and shines on them as if God is saying “You’re Welcome”.

Freeze Frame:

Narrator: Belief in the Lord and his power to provide a miracle. Joey did, and look what happened to him.
